What is the story?

An exciting participatory arts project created by twelve nominated students from Matravers School, Westbury & Jill Carter, Social Engagement Artist. Exploring the theme of identity, the lads directed and undertook a series of performative journeys. Using a collection of found objects (toys), they set out to explore a world of work & play, responding to folk, everyday situations and environments along the way. The hugely creative process was documented with photography, film, drawings, dialogue & journals. There was potential to unearth, stories to unfold and dreams of a large rabbit, clown and group of black sheep ... finding their way, discovering new friends, standing out from the crowd, and truly becoming somebody!

A visit to the chemist

The lads decide on a visit to the chemist and take up a seat at the counter, hang on, it is for Rabbit & Clown I mutter, so there is a shuffling re-arrangement and a lot of sighing for they have been on their legs for at least two hours and had no play break.  What would a group of lads look like in a shop to elders perhaps, I ask, a threat they reply.   There is a flurry of interest and focus suddenly on the medical literature in the nearby rack and a discussion about ailments and remedies. The pharmacist is invited to participate. In a flash, she joins in with the spirit of it all, then stops and asks me to ensure the photograph has the mortar and pestle displayed to show the symbol of a pharmacy.  How long does it take to train and what do you need to study, I ask, as the boys eye up the goods.  Well, she said, the training is five years and includes the study of zoology, biology, science,...that is my yellow certificate up there, she says proudly.
